In a letter to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ‘s Director General, Francis Gurry, international stakeholders call on the Organization to take action as we celebrate World IP Day, today, by promoting and protecting IP rights for innovators, creators and entrepreneurs across the world.
The letter, signed by more than seventy international organizations, celebrates this year’s theme of Women in innovation and creativity. The letter’s many signors underscore the cross-organization commitment to supporting women in innovation because “all of humanity benefits from the incredible discoveries that flow from strong IP rights.”
Further, the letter’s signatories urge WIPO, as well as the UN and the WHO, to take steps to ensure continued protection and cultivation of robust IP systems worldwide, emphasizing the crucial role IP rights play in advancing women in innovative industries and expanding the economy, bolstering discovery and saving lives. Specifically, the letter calls on WIPO to:
- Review the ways that IP enhances economic growth and development;
- Work with countries to enhance their IP regimes and protections; and
- Support IP as a property right that is necessary for enhancing human welfare.
IP Progress joins international stakeholders, today and every day, in recognizing the importance of IP rights for incentivizing innovators to create new goods and services, encouraging creators to produce original content, and inspiring entrepreneurs to enter – and thrive-- in the market.
