Innovation in Action: Clean Air Technology Supported by IP

Who: Dilip Goswami, Co-Founder, President and Chief Technology Officer at Molekule

Challenge: Indoor air pollution caused by small particles can negatively affect human health by causing a wide range of noncommunicable diseases, including stroke, heart disease and lung cancer. Most individuals spend around 90% of their time indoors, either at home or in the workplace, where the concentrations of some pollutants are two to five times higher than typical outdoor conditions. This means that indoor environmental conditions can have a significant impact on an individual’s well-being.

Opportunity: Air cleaning devices such as air purifiers can help eliminate the microbes and particles that cause respiratory complications and impact human health. Engineer Dilip Goswami was inspired to establish Molekule, a science and clean air company that employs photoelectrochemical oxidation technology (PECO) to eliminate a wide range of air pollutants by breaking down pollutants at a molecular level. By combining PECO nanotechnology with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration and air quality sensors, Molekule’s patented air purifiers can capture particles found in smoke, while also detecting and destroying organic air pollutants like bacteria, viruses, chemicals, molds, allergens and more. And with no ozone byproduct, Molekule air purifiers safely destroy such pollutants with no negative environmental impact.

As a science company, Molekule conducts extensive testing of its technology through its own laboratories. The technology has multiple uses, including combatting allergies, wildfire smoke, mold and viruses. Molekule provides an accessible and effective solution to improving indoor air quality, ultimately contributing to the well-being of individuals and communities alike.

Molekule's innovative approach to air purification highlights the crucial role of IP rights in fostering new and groundbreaking solutions to global challenges. By developing and patenting their unique PECO technology, Molekule has established a lasting competitive advantage in the air purification market, setting a high bar for competitors to follow. Their IP also gives Molekule support to continually improve on such innovation, leading to more groundbreaking solutions and important technological advances that benefit society.
